6 Most Common And Surprising Hives Triggers

Hives is one of the most common skin problems in which wheals (raised eruptions surrounded by erythema) appear on the skin along with severe itching, stinging and burning.

There are two types of hives – short-lived (acute) and long-term (chronic). Though none of them is normally life-threatening, but any swelling in the throat or any other symptom that cause breathing problems needs an immediate emergency care.

Hives affects around 20 percent of people at some time during their lives. This problem can be triggered by several substances or situations. It generally starts as an itchy patch of skin that evolves into swollen red welts. The itching can get aggregated with scratching, alcoholic beverages, exercise and emotional stress.

Wheals eruptions mainly result due to the release of chemical mediators from tissue mast cells and circulating basophils. These chemical mediators generally include histamine, cytokines, and platelet-activating factor. These mediators activate sensory nerves and lead to dilation of blood vessels and leakage of fluid into surrounding tissues.

However, here are some factors that trigger the release of chemical mediators, hence, resulting in Hives….

  1. Certain Food Items
There are certain food items that can cause hives. The most common foods that trigger hives are nuts, fish, chocolate, eggs, tomatoes, shellfish, fresh berries, and milk. Fresh foods generally cause hives more often than cooked foods. Moreover, there are certain food additives and preservatives that might also result in hives.
  2. Some Medications
Another thing that can be blamed to cause hives is certain medications. There are certain drugs that can cause hives and angioedema such as aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications including high blood pressure drugs (ACE inhibitors), ibuprofen, or painkillers like codeine.
  3. Certain Mealth Conditions
There are many chances that if a person is suffering with a chronic health conditions particularly any thyroid disease, infection, hepatitis, or cancer; he/she will have to deal with chronic hives.
  4. Physical Stimuli
Hives can also be caused by direct physical stimulation of the skin, for instance heat, sun exposure, cold, vibration, sweating, pressure, and exercise. The hives generally occur right where the skin was stimulated and hardly ever appear elsewhere. Moreover, most of the hives emerge within one hour after exposure.
  5. Bacterial and Viral Infections
According to National Study Institute, researchers in a study have found that there are certain bacterial infections like urinary tract infections and strep throat as well as viral infections like hepatitis and norovirus (a common cause of stomach “flu”) are also some common triggers of chronic hives.
  6. Stress
There is no denying the fact that stress plays a key role in a number of physical and mental health problems, and it is same in case of chronic idiopathic hives. Many health experts believe that stress can bring on and worsen chronic hives. It is quite common to see chronic idiopathic hives developing following a stressful period of time in many patients. Moreover, in a number of studies it has been found that people with chronic hives have higher levels of stress. Apart from these six major hives triggers, there are some other things that can result in development of hives. These include insect stings or bites, blood transfusions, pollen as well as certain plants, like poison oak and poison ivy.
