Conjunctivitis often known as pink eye is an inflammation caused in conjunctiva (which is the white part of the eye). It makes the eyes look reddish or even pinkish. Conjunctivitis can affect the one or both eyes. There is possibility of itching, burning and pain in the affected eye.

The common causes are viral and bacterial. Allergies like pollen or animal hair are also the cause.

Types of Conjunctivitis

There are three types of Conjunctivitis:

2. Infectious
3. Chemical

1. Allergic Conjunctivitis:
   • It is a type of Conjunctivitis which occurs between people who are more likely to have seasonal allergies.
   • Giant papillary Conjunctivitis is sub type of allergic conjunctivitis which is due to presence of some kind of foreign body.
2. Infectious Conjunctivitis: There are three sub types of Infectious Conjunctivitis:

   • Viral Conjunctivitis: This is caused by contagious viruses linked to the cold, coughing and sneezing that have sort of respiratory infection.
3. Chemical Conjunctivitis: It is caused by polluted air, Chlorine or excess exposure to the chemicals.

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

• Redness in the white eye part
• Itching eyes
• Blurred eyes
• Burning eyes
• Swelling of eyes
• Watery eyes, thick yellow discharge from the eye.
• Only one eye is affected first but usually it affects both eyes within a few hours.
• Feeling of grit in the eyes i.e feeling of something present in the eyes.
