Urticaria is one of the most common skin allergies. Urticaria is also known as hives or nettle rash in which erythematous, raised eruptions like that of wheals to appear on the skin along with intense itching, stinging and burning. Urticaria is nothing but one form of immunological or hypersensitivity reaction of the body in response to exposure to a certain allergen like an insect bite, food or chemicals or certain medicines etc. Urticaria can be acute, recurrent or chronic. In acute forms of urticaria, angioedema can be seen. In severe cases, anaphylatic reaction can be seen in the form of angioedema, difficulty in breathing, sudden shock.
Conventional medicines for urticaria attempts to control it mainly with the use of anti histaminic agents or steroids. Long-term use of anti histamines or steroids makes patient dependent on them like in a case of chronic urticaria.
