Abstract

Herpes zoster, commonly known as Shingles, is a viral infection caused by reactivation of the Varicella-zoster virus, which remains dormant in the body after an individual has had Chickenpox. The condition commonly presents with painful skin lesions, burning, tingling, or sensitivity along a specific nerve distribution. Although the visible rash generally resolves within a few weeks, some patients may continue to experience pain or discomfort after the skin lesions have improved.

In this case, we are trying to understand the treatment journey of a 51-year-old male who developed herpes zoster during a period of persistent personal and professional stress associated with difficulties in his business. The patient experienced painful skin lesions accompanied by burning and sensitivity in the affected region.

The patient experienced symptoms for approximately 1.5 months before consulting Dr. Vikas Singhal. During this period, he did not take any conventional medical treatment. He subsequently chose to begin treatment directly with individualized homeopathy at Dr. Singhal Homeo Clinic.

After a detailed constitutional assessment, the patient received individualized homeopathic treatment with a constitutionally selected remedy. The first signs of improvement were observed on the same day, with the patient reporting a marked reduction in the burning sensation. However, no noticeable changes were initially observed in the rashes. By the 12th day, the patient reported more than 80% improvement in his overall condition. Within one month, his condition improved by 95%, followed by complete recovery over the next 15 days.

The patient was subsequently followed for three months without medicine, during which no relapse was reported.

Understanding Herpes Zoster

Herpes zoster is a viral condition caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. After an individual recovers from chickenpox, the virus can remain inactive within nerve tissue and may reactivate later in life.

Shingles produces a painful or uncomfortable skin eruption that follows the distribution of an affected nerve. Patients may experience burning, tingling, itching, sensitivity, or pain before or alongside the rash.

Symptom severity and duration can vary considerably between individuals. In some cases, the skin lesions resolve within a few weeks, while pain or altered sensation may persist for longer.

Psychological and physical stress may also affect a person’s overall well-being during illness. In this case, the patient reported persistent stress related to difficulties in managing his business before the onset of his symptoms.

Conventional medical management of herpes zoster may include antiviral medicines and treatments to control pain and other associated symptoms. However, this patient did not take conventional treatment before seeking homeopathic care.

Homeopathic treatments are highly individualized. This means one patient receives one medicine, while another patient with the same condition might need a different homeopathic medicine. Treatment and remedies are selected according to the patient’s overall constitutional symptoms. Therefore, treatment outcomes may vary between individuals, and this case represents the experience of a single patient.

Presenting Complaints

At the time of consultation, the patient presented with the following complaints:

  • Painful skin lesions associated with herpes zoster on the left chest, armpit, and shoulder
  • Burning sensation over the affected area.

Clinical Assessment at Dr. Singhal Homeo Clinic

During the initial clinical assessment, Dr. Vikas Singhal evaluated the case in detail, taking into account various aspects of the patient’s general health and constitutional symptoms. The assessment considered the patient’s presenting complaints, duration and progression of symptoms, previous treatment history, general health, emotional state, lifestyle, and relevant personal history.

Particular attention was given to the patient’s persistent business-related stress and its relationship with his overall well-being.

The assessment revealed the following observations:

  • Clinical history consistent with herpes zoster.
  • Symptoms present for approximately 1.5 months before consultation.
  • Localized painful skin lesions.
  • Burning and sensitivity over the affected region.
  • No conventional treatment had been taken before consultation.
  • Persistent emotional stress associated with business challenges.
  • Physical discomfort affecting his routine activities.

After evaluating the complete symptom profile, an individualized homeopathic treatment plan was prepared using a homeopathic remedy selected through the repertorisation process.

Homeopathic Treatment Strategy

Dr. Vikas Singhal developed an individualized treatment plan based on the patient’s presenting symptoms and constitutional assessment.

The treatment strategy focused on the patient’s overall symptom pattern rather than considering the skin lesions in isolation. His physical complaints, emotional stress, general health, and progression of symptoms were considered during the selection of the individualized homeopathic medicine.

The treatment objectives included:

  • Reducing the intensity of pain and burning.
  • Managing persistent skin sensitivity.
  • Monitoring the progression of the lesions.
  • Supporting gradual improvement in the patient’s overall condition.
  • Addressing the patient’s individual constitutional symptom pattern.
  • Monitoring the influence of persistent stress on his general well-being.
  • Assessing treatment response through periodic follow-ups.

The patient was advised to follow the prescribed treatment consistently and report any changes in symptoms during subsequent consultations.

Follow-Up and Treatment Progress

Day-1: First Signs of Improvement Noticed by the Patient

The patient reported the first signs of improvement on the same day treatment was initiated.

The burning sensation was significantly less intense, making the physical discomfort more manageable. However, no noticeable change was observed in the rashes at this initial stage.

The patient continued the prescribed treatment and remained under regular observation.

Day-12th Day

By approximately the 12th day of treatment, the patient reported more than 80% improvement in his overall symptoms.

The intensity of the burning sensation and associated discomfort had reduced substantially. The skin symptoms also showed progressive improvement compared with their initial presentation.

One-Month Follow-Up

Within approximately one month of starting homeopathic treatment, the patient reported more than 95% improvement in his condition.

The major symptoms had reduced significantly, and his overall physical comfort had improved considerably. The visible skin manifestations had also progressed towards resolution.

Complete Recovery

During the following 15 days, the remaining symptoms continued to resolve.

By the end of this period, the patient reported complete recovery from the symptoms associated with the condition.

Medicine-Free Follow-Up

Following complete recovery, the patient entered a three-month medicine-free follow-up period.

During these three months, no relapse was reported. The patient remained symptom-free without requiring continued medicine during the follow-up period.

Outcome of the Case

The patient demonstrated substantial improvement following individualized homeopathic treatment that he chose to begin directly, without first undergoing allopathic treatment.

The first improvement was reported on the same day, primarily through a significant reduction in the burning sensation, while no immediate change was observed in the skin rashes.

By approximately the 12th day, the patient reported more than 80% improvement. Within one month, improvement exceeded 95%, followed by complete recovery over the subsequent 15 days.

The patient was then monitored for three months without medicine, during which no relapse was reported.

Discussion

Herpes zoster, or Shingles, may involve both cutaneous manifestations and neurological symptoms such as burning, pain, and altered sensitivity. The patient’s presentation also occurred during a period of considerable business-related stress, which formed an important part of his overall case history.

Despite experiencing painful symptoms for approximately 1.5 months, the patient had not taken conventional treatment and chose to seek individualized homeopathy as his first line of treatment. Therefore, the case assessment focused on his complete symptom profile, including the physical manifestations and associated emotional factors.

The patient’s reported response showed an early reduction in the burning sensation, followed by progressive improvement in the overall symptoms. The subsequent medicine-free follow-up without a reported relapse also confirmed sustained improvement even after the discontinuation of the medication.

Conclusion

This case describes the treatment journey of a 51-year-old male with herpes zoster who experienced persistent physical discomfort along with significant business-related stress.

The patient experienced symptoms for approximately 1.5 months before consulting Dr. Vikas Singhal and did not take any allopathic or conventional medical treatment during this period. He chose to begin treatment directly with individualized homeopathy.

Following the assessment and initiation of homeopathic treatment, the patient reported a significant reduction in the burning sensation on the same day. The patient reported more than 80% improvement around the 12th day, followed by more than 95% improvement within one month and complete recovery during the following 15 days.

A subsequent three-month medicine-free follow-up period was completed without a reported relapse.
